Building on principles experienced in the classroom Learning Cubed, LLC announces today the release of Word Cub Letters & Sounds for the iPhone and iPod touch. Now parents of preschoolers have a whole new way to make learning phonics fun.
"We may be indie app developers, but we are parents first. We try to balance our four year old's interest in our gadgets with our desire to pass an idle moment wisely," says co-creator Roy Selig. "We wrote this app for our son because he wanted to play on our phones and we wanted him to do something fun and educational with them. He loves words and we wanted to encourage that also. So Word Cub was born and he was hooked. When we showed the app around we discovered his friends enjoyed playing it too."
The advent of small, powerful devices like the iPhone and iPod touch creates a conundrum for parents. There is no denying their power to attract and hold youngsters' attention, but much of the content available on them is skewed toward older kids. Parents of young children are seeking good choices. Start-ups like Learning Cubed are filling this need.
"The touch screen technology behind the iPhone combined with its visual and audio capabilities make it a terrific learning environment," says Word Cub's co-creator, Rachel Selig. "Learning theory and my own experience as an educator shows we grasp a concept more thoroughly when that concept engages more than one of our senses."
Word Cub takes full advantage of the iPhone to engage a child's senses. Using a digital version of the alphabet blocks we all grew up with, children touch, tap and twirl letters and words in a colorful 3D space. The Letters & Sounds edition of Word Cub includes three exciting activities: Letter Match, Word Discovery and Sound Match.
In addition, Word Cub includes support for a progression of word concepts, from short vowels to consonants to consonant blends. "We want to make this app a lasting value to parents, so we include more than your average app", says Roy Selig. "We hope families enjoy Word Cub and try other apps we develop."
