Q: Apps on my device are running slowly. Is there anything I can do?
A: We hear this most often from first generation iPhone users. In working with our beta groups we've learned that users don't reboot their devices very often. They quite natually think of their iPhones as the modern equivalent of what hung on the wall in their parents' kitchen. You don't reboot a phone, do you? Well, with smart phones you should. When Rachel bought her iPhone she took a class at the Apple Store to get acquainted with the device. The first words out of the instructor's mouth were 'reboot once a week'. So if things are running slowly, reboot. It's easy to do. Press and hold the power and home buttons simultaneously for about five seconds. When you see the prompt slide right to power down the device. In a moment the screen will go blank. With the device completely powered down press the power button again. The device will reboot and this may just make things run faster for you.
Q: Sometimes I can't hear sounds even when the volume is turned way up. What's going on?
A: First check that you don't have your device on mute. We've all done it so don't be embarassed. If you still experience the problem you've stumbled upon a pretty well documented issue with iPhones. The volume that's reported on screen when you click the volume hard keys on the side of the phone may not match the device's actual volume setting. The best explanation that we've heard is that both the ringer volume and the sound volume are controlled through these hard keys and the device can sometimes get confused as to what it's setting. The quickest fix we know is to go into your iPod music player, start a song and set the volume using the slider found there.
